Episode 67: Cliches, EPs and Bikinis

Black Bikini Alpha

Black Bikini Alpha

With an interview with Phil of Modern Cliches, another Track of the Week, a review, and launching the new voicemail (it’s a US number, so +1, then 646-462-4073 and extension 15797) to we’ve got quite the packed show this week!

First, Phil joins us for a chat about the upcoming Modern Cliches double A side, about upcoming gigs and other things.

The Track of the Week comes to us from our new friends over at Futureproof Records and Promotions.  They’re called Black Bikini Alpha and their newest single, “Nightmare” drops at the end of the month (the 29th of November.)

We’ve also got “Soar”, a pre-release track from the upcoming Zalinski EP release called Actions, Reactions and Misunderstandings.  It’s quite good, and we’re gonna have them on the show for an interview next week so make sure you come back.

Speaking of coming back… come and participate on the live show!  I’ve put nifty “figure-out-the-showtime-in-my-timezone” link on the website, or if you’re time zone savvy just come to The Justin Wayne Show dot com or Recharged Radio dot com at 8pm GMT.  (It’s 3pm Eastern, 2pm Central, 1pm Mountain, 12pm Pacific for you Americans). If you’re a band, it’s a GREAT way to get your stuff played as you can talk to me via the chatroom and I’d be a fool not to play your stuff if your chatting in the chatroom.  It’d seem pretty rude, wouldn’t it?  So, by that it’s also a great way to chat with the artists that get played on the show.  Kind of like a forum?  (Don’t tell Jordan I said that.)

That’s about it this week.  Here’s what you came for…

Show Preview - Cliches, EPs and Bikinis

No, I didn’t go on holiday to Hawaii.  Should do, though!

Phil from the Modern Cliches joins us this week to enlighten us on how a band wins an Oxford Battle of the Bands and then somehow ends up in Camden on a balcony doing a internet TV program.  We also spin the new single, Your Lucky Numbers.

PersonalisedBlackBikiniAs a special treat and in response to getting their track played at Track of the Week (on the JW Show) Zalinski have sent us the new tracks off their upcoming EP.  We’ll spin one of those and enlighten you on when and where you can learn more and get this rockin’ EP.

We’ll also be highlighting the latest David Couch review as he’s just done the album Replace, Rewire by Wellness out of New York.

Our second Track of the Week here at The Justin Wayne Show is a special one as it was handed to be at the Trenton and Free Radical single launch (which was off the hook, btw) by Phil of Futureproof Records: “Nightmare” by Black Bikini Alpha.  Definitely something to look forward to.

I might also go on about the weekly shop, how Jordan can’t REALLY grow a beard, and all that other kind of silly stuff that happens LIVE again this week 8pm GMT (because the US and the UK are back to proper time… I did enjoy that nice lie in last Sunday.)

Ta for now, see you Wednesday (or sometime Thursday for the podcast.)

Wellness - Replace, Rewire

replace-rewirecover1Album: Wellness
Artist: Replace, Rewire
Release Date: July, 2009

One should absorb the colour of life, but one should never remember its details. Details are always vulgar”

The details will always get in the way, a sad fact of life that must always be observed and then duly ignored when the context is sound. Wellness’s album Replace, Rewire is an instinctive album that has no time for trivia. At just under a half-hour the album is the perfect length, you have a chance to relflect on the whole album while the songs are still fresh in your mind. The songs do the job without overindulging the rock attitudes keeping the songs un-polluted and straight to the point. It’s a brand of melancholy rock; using the ambiance to achieve the effect that your listening to a maturer record that maintains a low-fi gritty integrity.

If you like slow-moving, alternative-style, noise rock then you will like Wellness, However the songs that should be hits fail to pack that long lasting punch. There’s no rallying cry that will have you swear allegiance on first listen, simply songs that will over time gather a murmured acquiesce.

Wellness Press Photo 1The Title track “Replace, Rewire” picks up the tempo with a harder and faster beat, and a good arrangement that makes it one of my favourites on the album. Along with the opening track “The Power Of A Magnetic Heart” which has some surprisingly beautiful moments. Once again though the songs lead you to that perfect place and leave you hanging. The songs build and build but offer no release; no break in the rhythm for the emotion, which the songs have crafted perfectly, to escape.

The mix on this album isn’t quite ready, ending up with something somewhat half-baked but it does have the ingredients to make this a prominent player in your music collection.

Episode 49 - Special Special

There’s some great tracks on this episode and some special ones too.

But… before I get any further I want to thank my new friend Colin and the Ouroboros Podcast. He spent a bunch of time plugging the JW Show on his, so go have a visit with Colin if you’re interested in hearing not only some more great music, but his insights into independent music videos AND all sorts of other geo-political things going on including cycle racing! If you were at the Mongolian Barbecue he’d be a “highly recommended” sauce.

I also want to tell you about one of the special track that we have this week. Coming to us from Perseverance Records is the R&B stylings of The Sales Brothers. This appropriately titled record, Hired Guns, marks the first of the brothers’ own recordings – back in 1978. (“Whoa! That’s like 30 years ago!” Just wait…

These two brothers were one of the most solid rhythm sections (drums and bass) in the industry back in the 70s. Playing with the likes of Iggy Pop, David Bowie, and many more. When it came to be their time they decided to play their true love, R&B. After producing this great record some 30 years ago, on the eve of taking over for the Blues Brothers on Saturday Night Live – a ticket to stardom – Tony had a near fatal car crash and ended up in a coma. Luckliy he survived the coma and recovery, but the tapes from the album ended up in the back of a closet not to be unearthed for 30 years. Until now…

Robin Esterhammer, CEO of Perseverace Records sent me the link to The Sales Brothers amid a few other film soundtracks and as l listened to the great music I read this story. Amazed and moved by both the music and the story I put them on for you. I truly hope you enjoy it and if you get a chance, slide on over to http://www.myspace.com/thesalesbrothers and have a listen for yourself. If you sign up for the newsletter, they send you a free track! How great is that?

As for the rest of the playlist – it’s packed with good stuff. Enjoy!

We’re switching to releasing the shows on Tuesday… I’ll talk more about that on, well… on Tuesday!
