Smoking Ghosts Matthew Ferry Drops By For 5.5

Jan 22, 2015 by

Smoking Ghosts’ Jesse Cottrell, Ben Dominici, and Matthew Ferry play what they term as “post apocalyptic tragicomedy pop”. Drummer Matthew Ferry dropped by TJWS chat room and laid some serious laughs on us. Here’s the result”

When you’re onstage, what’s different about you from the every day you?

When I’m on stage, I think I actually focus and am not a space cadet. Can’t say that happens during the day. Also, I’m the drummer, by the way. I also probably make too many inappropriate kissy faces to the bass player. My wife gets a little jealous.

What or who inspires you to write/perform music?

Inspiration. To limit that to the Smoking Ghosts aspect to my musical career, I would say that I love getting those

self affirming loving emails back from the rest of the band after sending them my drum tracks. We are all currently living across the continent — mexico city, cali, nyc, vermont. So everything is done via email/skype. And ya know, I hate it when it comes back, “sorry this isn’t going to work…” They can be really mean, those guys you wouldn’t know it by the sweetness of this song.

Tell us about the first time you heard yourself on radio.

Well, I was doing a 5.5 question series at the time, but let me get back to the radio question. You know it happens so often that it’s hard to remember the first time.

But… First time I hear myself on the radio I was on a malfunctioning Ham radio…I asked for ham on rye and it popped out a Rueben. Needless to say, it was horrible, and not just because the reuben was soggy. I’m also allergic to rye, by the way.

What’s been your most memorable performance ever?

I’d definitely say that was the time we brought a microwave on stage and made popcorn for the fans while we played. Who wants to listen and be hungry?

What’s your favorite kind of sandwich and what would you wash it down with?

Yeah, I’m hungry. Will y’all buy me a slice for doing this 5.5 questions. or do you have a green chat room with free water. cause I’m thirsty, too. Favorite kind of sandwich: a manwich dude juice, of course my band mates are pretty heavy sweaters so it’s plentiful or how about a knuckle sandwich? Washed down with ketchup.

What one song never ever leaves your music player’s playlist?

Are you familiar with Lamb Chop? The Song That Never Ends it’s killer Goes really nice with The
