5.5 Questions with Samantha Preis

Jan 28, 2014 by

Samantha Preis says her “soulful and introspective” music “touches upon consciousness, morality, and the human condition”.

After hearing tracks from her just released album, Good News, it’s the relaxed and quiet moments which draw us into her intriguing lyrics and bewitching voice.

We took a moment to find out a little more about Samantha with another 5.5 Questions:

Tell us about the first time you heard yourself on radio.

The first time I heard myself on the radio? Have you ever seen That Thing You Do? It was that scene. Jumping around, crying, yelling at friends and family to tune in. Utter chaos…and one of the best moments ever.

As a performer, what’s been your coolest day ever?

Coolest day ever? Maybe, it was a whole week. In 2010, I did a short tour of Cairo, Egypt with some other Berklee musicians to raise funds for less-fortunate children and children with cancer. We conducted a clinic at a middle school where we spoke to the kids about music and then did short performances. At the end of the clinic, kids could come up and ask questions and take pictures and play our instruments. It was amazing getting to know some of these kids. At the end of the week, we performed two big shows for thousands of people in the center of Cairo. It was amazing to have been inspiration for these kids and to be part of a cultural exchange. The tour really changed my whole perspective on music and the direction I wanted to take my life. I’d like to continue to be a part of a cultural exchange. I’m currently living in London getting my Master’s at UCL in Cultural Heritage Studies.

Who’s your musical role model and why?

Paul McCartney. Incredible songwriter and artist. He continues to put out new music and art and absolutely kills it on stage. He stays healthy and humble and sends across really positive messages. If you haven’t seen him live, you need to. Total sob fest. Everyone in the audience who has been in any way affected by Beatles era is connected while he is playing. Don’t pay $300 for therapy, go to a Paul McCartney concert. It’s 10 times better.

When you’re onstage, what’s different about you from the every day person?

You’d have to see me and let me know I play solo a lot. The songs I play have all been written independently so you’re hearing the original arrangements.

What’s your ideal sandwich and what would you wash it down with?

My current fav is a whole-wheat baguette with brie, cranberry sauce, and lettuce. Wash it down with a cool glass of Prosecco ;). Mmmm.

Tell us 3 songs from your current playlist.

1. “Jitterboogie” by Michael Hedges

2. “Cherokee” by Cat Power

3. “Undertow” by Warpaint

Thank you, Samantha!
