JW Show 189: Producing Independent Music

Apr 10, 2013 by

Producers in the recording process become a crucial and important piece to the music recording puzzle. After a heated website comment about artists “not writing their own songs”, we’ve decided to circle the wagons and have a discussion about producing, songwriting, and ultimately what makes music independent – especially in recent years. Umong Shah and Claire Rozario join me to help  sort through the facts and opinions on this hot topic.

We also play new music from ParetoAlex HightonWoven Bird, and celebrate the life and recent passing of music producer Andy Johns.

Johns produced and engineered many enormous records and worked with the likes of Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and our own Titty Bingo. TB’s digital manager contacted me the morning before the live show to inform me of Johns’ death, and also heard from the lead singer and songwriter from the band Dahr Jamail.

Dahr on Andy Johns:  ”Andy was funny, smart, well read. He lived for the music and was our dear friend. We will miss him.”

Here’s a video of Titty Bingo recording “Chimes of Freedom” for Volume II with Andy Johns engineering and producing. You’ll hear Andy say, “Don’t push ’em… here we go,” at the very beginning of this clip.

Here’s another video with Johns appearing: Titty Bingo recording “Here Comes The Rain” for Volume II with Andy Johns engineering and producing.
