Claire is at it again, as we hear the full interviews with Vienna and Screama Ballerina from last week’s Exposure Music European Showcase down at Bar Music Hall in Shoreditch.  We’ve also got brand new tracks from Ryan Peel, Keston Cobblers Club, Jenny Dinh, The Glass Child… it’s another packed-with-music show which you were owed after a lot of Calvin Roche and interviews last week.

Van Susans are originally Bromley lads who leaped into fame and went from playing gigs in front of family and friends to performing at IndigO2 all in the space of a year. Now we see them playing at Proud2 to celebrate the release of their new single “Bricks Not Sticks Or Straw”.

The Interview:

(Editor’s note: If you listen to the audio portion, Claire profusely apologies for calling the band “Van Susan” and not “Van Susans”.  She has since attended another one of their gigs and her housemate has become a die-hard fan, so I think atonement has been achieved.)

How the band got started:

“Me and Olly met and started writing songs from there” Rob.
(They then recruited Rob’s 2 brothers along with Ollys brothers best mate and started Van Susans. Holly was the latest member to join, and this was in fact her first live gig with the band.)

Described your music in 3 words:

“It’s pretty good.” Olly G.

“Average at best” Ed.

Who are your influences:

“We are all pretty varied.” Olly A.

“Rihanna” Rob.

“All have different taste, I like Hip hop.” Holly.

“That’s weird. We love American rock bands – which we probably shouldn’t say since we are a British band.” Olly A.

“I find it difficult to decide who I like more out of The Wanted and One Direction.” Olly G.

How do you write your own music/choose the style of it:

“We basically fight, and the last one standing gets to decide.” Rob.

“We start with a guitar riff and then go from there. Me Rob and Ed are the main song writers of band at the moment, but Olly [G] you’ve written a few songs. It’s a pretty good team we’ve got going on.” Olly A.

Dynamics back stage:

“We are pretty mellow, play music.” Rob.

Most looking forward to:

“Playing.” Olly A.
“Going home. No I’m joking, the crowd.” Olly G.

Pre show ritual:

“We like to have a meal before hand, have a little chat before we go on. Bond. Actually we once did a hand shake on stage, before anyone said anything, it was a bit weird.” Olly G.

Best thing that’s happened to the band in the last year:

“We recently toured with the Beautiful South, only half the band, the best half, me Rob and Ed (joking) Along with Holly joining the band.” Olly A.

What’s in the pipeline:

Album released at the end of May.
“We’ve already started writing the second album, very depressing songs coming” Olly A.
“Very upbeat but sad. It will make you cry whilst dancing.” Rob.

Countless Thousands at the Bomb Shelter

An absolute stonker of a gig – Discovery 2 – went down at the AAA in Kensington in October, and we’re pleased to bring you the full live sets and interviews from the evening in this special podcast.  Thanks to the artists who played: Zodiac N Black, October Sky, Billy Vincent, and Theo Altieri as well as the venue, all of the Herts Uni folk and the extremely receptive audience who attended.

It’s the full two-hour show with interviews and the audio quality is quite good!  Do let us know in the comments below what you think of this.  Should we post the whole thing again or shall we just do a few songs from each band?

It’s also worth mentioning that this gig is a monthly occurrence, with next month’s lineup looking as promising as the last.

David Goo came up to the flat and gave us a good dose of his new album, “World Domination” by playing a few live tracks for us and spinning some tracks off the album.  I pried into his personal life, the reasoning behind a few of his songs, and a look into what it takes to form a DGVB tune from idea to the stage.

An amazingly interesting man, Dave is also very humble and self-analytical – quite possibly the biggest critic of their music.  It shows in their extreme attention to detail and the fun they have once the tunes are crafted and ready.  Also it may explain why their album took so many years to record.

That’s right, I had the distinct privilege of interviewing drummer, songwriter, singer, and writer Jacob Slichter who plays in a band called Semisonic and currently has a book out now called So You Wanna Be a Rock and Roll Star.  We spoke for quite a long time talking about the types of record deals artists should think about, what Semisonic went through chasing their record deal, touring, what they’re all up to now, what Jake thinks of radio and the music industry now, and a few other bits and bobs.

That’s right, independent music legend Martin Sexton is joining us tonight, and since tech didn’t allow it to go live, we’ve got it here.

It’s not just because he`s on his way to play at Borderline in London on Monday, but that it’s 9/11 and his most recent album, Sugarcoating, focuses on just that.

The title track cuts straight through and asks many questions about the 9/11 attacks, but in a way where you might not even think about the words the first time as the tune is so upbeat and the melody so pleasing to the ears. Perhaps the song itself is an ironic critique of what it`s critiquing – the glossing over of mass media.

However, Martin is far from mass media, although his own independent label, Kitchen Table Records, is doing very well. He broke off from Atlantic in 2001 and hasn’t looked back, and we discuss this with him in the interview as well.
