5.5 Questions with Above Water

Feb 5, 2015 by

James Vassallo of Above Water stopped by to hear the band’s new track and answer 5.5 Questions with TJWS. Here’s what he had to say:

Tell us about the first time you heard yourself on radio.

This is actually going to be the first time I’ve heard myself on the radio. Really excited for it!

What sound do you love?

Well, I’m a big Adult Alternative music kind of guy. I’ve grown up listening to a lot of John Mayer and Jason Mraz. I love John Mayer’s Stratocaster sound he gets on his guitar in his songs, especially the mellow tone in his album Continuum. I also love the laid back acoustic guitar sound in a lot of Jason’s songs. It always puts in me a good mood.

As a musician, what’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?

I would say the hardest thing I’ve had to do was improvise a guitar solo in eighth grade in front of a few hundred

people. Now I love soloing for people and I really got into it but the first time I ever did it I was scared out of my mind. Took a lot to just start improvising and let my fingers go where they wanted instead of doing a solo I had already learned.

What is something you learned in the last month?

I saw on a picture form twitter that people who bite their pencils and pens are more creative than people who don’t. I’ve always bit my pencils so it made me feel pretty good haha

If your life was a novel, what would be the title and how would your story end?

If my life was a novel I think it would be called, I Hope Tomorrow Is Like Today. I hope my story never ends. Every day is a new blank page and I’ll let the ending write itself.

What’s your favorite kind of sandwich and what would you wash it down with?

My favorite sandwich would have to be post thanksgiving leftover sandwich. It consists of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, squash, pretty much everything that was on the table. And I’d love to wash it down with a coke.

What one song never ever leaves your music player’s playlist?

The one song that never leaves my playlist would have to be Stop This Train – John Mayer. He has an acoustic great guitar lead on it that I love and the I find the lyrics so deep and meaningful to me.

Thanks James!
